My ideas about "Svegliateve nel core" -Perry Otto

Out of all of the songs we’ve (women’s choir) been singing in class, I’ve really enjoyed the time we’ve spent on “Svegliatevi nel core.” It is very dramatic, and is unlike all the other songs we are learning for the Oprah concert. When I first heard it, it reminded me of “Hist Whist,” a song that we sang last year at the Poetry in Music concert, because they are both spooky, and unusual. I think that “Svegliatevi nel core,” is even scarier, because it is in another language. When a song is in English, we can pretty easily interpret what it has to say, but since this song is not in English, the meaning and words of the song are somewhat unknown. I found a translation of the song that gives the “dramatic situation.” It says that the singer had just seen their father beheaded, and wants to get revenge. According to this translation (the link is below), the song says, “Rouse yourselves in my heart, furies of spirit offended, to wreak on a traitor, bitter vengeance…” I find it interesting that the way that the notes come together, and how the song sounds, can give us clues to the type of song it is, (scary, pretty, etc.) without even knowing the words. I also looked at a video (linked down below) on YouTube, and even without being able to know the words meaning, the sounds and expressions of the singer can tell you that they are distraught and angry.

  1. You're definitely right about Svegliateve bel core being dramatic! I watched the video you linked at the bottom and could really see all of the emotion thats in it. Angelika Kirchschlager, the singer in the video had a lot of power and emotion in her voice. I think her acting helped convey the tone as well, the whole scene was very intensive. I also noticed that the props added to the overall feel of it. There was moving "waves" towards the back of the stage and a giant hand attached to the ceiling. At one point the singer was reaching up towards the hand, which I thought was pretty theatrical.

  2. I definitely agree with you Perry, I love this song Svegliateve nel core in womens choir. It is by far my favorite due to its enchanting tones and sounds within it. It is definitely the most diverse piece in womens choir. I watched the video linked in the bottom and absolutely engaged in the piece. I found it so intriguing how the song was sang in that video. You could tell how passionate the singer was about it and how deeply she connected to it. She conveyed it so well through her different facial expressions of sadness and distraught. It seemed as if she was telling a story through her facial expressions and voice, rather than a choir just singing it. My favorite part was in the beginning, when the stage was dark then the lights shined onto the singer and her voice was jaw opening...SO POWERFUL. Then, it slowed down towards the middle, giving you a sense of calmfulness. Then speed up again building up this POWER again. I loved it! The costumes and props helped convey the story too. I can definetely understand what your getting at, when you say we don't know what the lyrics mean but just by watching the vocalist, it is clear that theirs anger, excitement, frightfulness, and power being expressed. I loved how the singer was running around on stage during the fast tempos and walked slowly during the slow tempos, then layed on the floor making it so dramatic and theatrical. It's that kind of piece, the audience see's and never gets bored of. Loved the video, such a great piece and really happy to learn and perform it this year. Great post:)

  4. I totally agree with you perry, there is totally a power in this song that nearly immediately sense. I think due to the slight background history it is less spooky and more a conveyance of the tormented soul of the singer. They are speaking of revenge and ferocity of the heart in the loud parts and probably sorrow for the person who they are avenging in the calmer parts and then at the end they are resolved and will take out their revenge. I'm not sure what it says in the calm part, but the singer seems to be sad and this song is about the rage burning in the singer, so I just assumed they are talking about the person who was wronged, which in the end adds to their rage and resolves them to carry out their vengeance. I also really love this song especially when we get the cool dark minor chords and then a softer entrance into the "lombra del genitore" part. (I think I probably misspelled that, but you get the idea). I might've misinterpreted your post, so I apologize if I did. But anyways the song is just SO GOOD and I'm really glad you liked it too. :D
