Adele's Laughing Song

For this choir concert, I'm going to be doing a solo called "Adele's Laughing Song". This song is pretty traditional opera, with a few high D's here and there (uh-oh), but it's also very humorous and funny, if you actually pay some sort of attention to the lyrics. Before I do this solo, I wanted to research the musical a little to understand what i'm going to be singing about. This song comes from an operetta called 'Die Fledermaus', composed by Johann Strauss II. Originally, this opera comes from a german farce called 'Das Gefangis' which means "the prison", by Julius Roderich Benedix (1811-1873). One of the characters in this show is Adele, the character that sings the song I will be performing. She plays a maid. This show has been made into many movies, and there are many impressive covers of this song on Youtube. The link below is one of my favorites, and also the one I have been using to practice with.

I am really grateful and excited to learn this song, and it has made me significantly more interested in studying opera.

  1. I watched the video that you linked, and I think that is a pretty funny song. I think that the lyrics with the combination of how she was acting while singing the song, makes it an nice sounding song, overall. I really liked how the singer added some acting into the song. Sometimes, I feel like someone will over do the acting, but I really liked the amount of effort she put into it, because it wasn’t over done but you could tell she was having a fun time, and was confident in singing the song. The occasional hand gesture and facial expression kept me interested, and I felt like she was really getting into the character that she was singing as. I think that finding a song that stands out, like this one, helps spark an interest in oprah, or any song genre in general. I also really like seeing the songs that are in English and comparing them to other songs that are in different languages. It is interesting to see how they are similar or different, and this one seems very modern, and not necessarily super serious. Some of the other songs we are singing are pretty serious. Overall, I enjoyed listening to this song, and good luck with the high D’s!

  6. I think this singer did an excellent job. Even though she was performing it as a solo rather than in an actual opera she put movement and gestures into her performance which helped give some context to what was happening at the point in the opera. Although she hit every note on pitch I had a little trouble understanding some of the words. However, because she was singing at such a high pitch it would be hard for everyone to clearly dictate every word. Additionally I watched Adele’s Laughing Song in an opera with Marquis and ensemble. I think it is good if everyone knows the context of the songs we are singing in regards to the opera they are from. In drama it helps to understand the play from which a monologue is from and I think learning the context of a song for choir can only be helpful. I find this song very funny because the maid is lying but everyone at the party believes her rather than Marquis. Thus, the whole song is sung somewhat ironically. I commend the singer for being able to hit every note without sliding, which I struggle with when singing high notes. Additionally, what I think this singer did the best was breath control. I purposefully listened for places where she might have taken a breath but I could not find any. Overall, I think she did a solid job, especially by keeping the audience entertained with movement.
If anyone would like to watch this song preformed in an opera here is the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhprFhRylEc
